Handmade Porcelain Pottery

Ellen Bartos
Ellen Bartos makes each piece of pottery by hand from smooth porcelain
clay.
After the initial bisque firing, the floral decoration is painted with underglaze
colors,
using a fine-pointed Kolinsky sable brush. The piece is then dipped in clear
lead-free
glaze and fired for 14 hours at 2300 degrees Fahrenheit. After a day of cooling,
the pottery
emerges from the kiln with luminous colors and a glass-like finish characteristic
of fine porcelain.
Both functional and decorative,
Cottage Clayworks pottery is microwave, oven, and dishwasher safe.
Ellen has been making pottery on the wheel since 1977.
She received her BFA in Ceramics from California College of Arts and Crafts
in 1981,
opened her first studio in Berkeley, and has been a potter ever since.
She has also spent many summers employed in California's Sierra mountains
as a whitewater river guide, Yosemite firefighter, and Forest Service backcountry
cook.
Her work has been shown in galleries and invitational shows nationwide.
She now resides in Northhampton, Massachusetts, where she enjoys trailriding
and
dressage with her horse Limerick.
